On January 20, 2025, Can Tho University (CTU) welcomed Mr. Ito Naoki - Ambassador of Japan to Vietnam, along with a delegation. The program was attended by Prof. Dr. Nguyen Thanh Phuong - Chairman of CTU Board of Trustees; Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tran Trung Tinh - Rector of CTU; members of the Board of Directors; representatives of relevant units; and Mr. Sugano Yuichi - Chief Representative of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) Vietnam Office.

Japan has always been one of CTU's strategic partners in education, scientific research, and technology transfer. The achievements from collaborative projects between the two sides have brought numerous practical benefits to the comprehensive development of CTU, particularly in upgrading infrastructure to support teaching and research activities.
In the working session, Prof. Dr. Nguyen Thanh Phuong affirmed the long-lasting and sustainable cooperative relationship. He expressed his gratitude for the support of the Japanese Government, thanks to which the University has developed strongly, especially in recent years. The Chairman of the CTU Board of Trustees emphasized: “Japan is not only an important partner but also a close friend of Vietnam in many fields, from economics, culture, education to science and technology. We are proud of the two countries' achievements in cooperation, including cooperation activities between CTU and Japanese universities, organizations, and enterprises. CTU has signed 98 Memoranda of Understanding (MoU) and cooperation agreements (MoA) with 45 Japanese universities, organizations, and enterprises. CTU has sent 131 teaching staff to study and research at educational institutions in Japan. It can be affirmed that thanks to the support of projects and cooperation programs with Japan, CTU has always been ranked among the top 10 best universities in Vietnam according to all rankings, and the Agriculture and Fisheries sector is ranked 301-350 in the world.”

Mr. Ito Naoki also expressed interest in the contributions and role of CTU in promoting cooperation with Japan. He also affirmed his commitment to promoting bilateral cooperation for sustainable development and mutual prosperity. The Japanese Ambassador to Vietnam highly appreciated the collaborative training and research programs between CTU and Japanese universities and research institutes, including key projects on climate change, smart agriculture, and socio-economic development activities.

In addition to education, CTU is a leading research center serving the region's economy. The University excels in research and technology transfer, particularly in agriculture and fisheries. With annual funding of around 90 billion VND from various sources, CTU executes about 300 research projects domestically and internationally to address pressing issues and foster sustainable development in the Mekong Delta.

Prof. Dr. Tran Trung Tinh proposed cooperation activities between the University and Japan in the future, focusing on (1) continuing cooperation with Japanese partners, focusing on developing agriculture, fisheries, and the environment; (2) developing training in the field of health sciences; (3) investing in the development of the semiconductor industry, training high-quality advanced labor, attracting investors, and developing the Mekong Delta region.
The working session marked a significant milestone in the cooperation between Can Tho University and Japan. It also served as a valuable opportunity to strengthen the strategic partnership, opening up new prospects for collaboration; focusing on key fields such as agriculture, aquaculture, environment, technology, and natural sciences; facilitating capacity building for faculty and students; organizing international workshops, towards commemorate the CTU's 60th anniversary. Both parties affirmed their commitment to implementing the discussed collaborative programs, promoting technology transfer in emerging fields, and expanding into new areas of cooperation. These efforts aim to bring practical benefits to the development of Can Tho University and the Mekong Delta region.
