The International Conference on Conservation Genetics Mekong River Basin

In two days of March 06th and 07th, 2016, Can Tho University (CTU) collaborated Nha Trang University to organize the International Conference on Conservation Genetics Mekong River Basin (ICCGMRB - 2017) at College of Aquaculture and Fisheries, CTU. Besides the domestic experts, the Conference attracted many experts and researchers from USA, Laos, Cambodia, Australia, Norway, Thailand, etc.

The Mekong River plays a crucial role to riparian countries, specifically the livelihood of millions of people who are living along. The Mekong River is one of the largest rivers which have high biodiversity in the world. More than 2,000 fish species and other aquatic plants and animals are nursed by the river. These are important natural resources that have fed generations of people in the region. However, the resources have been subjected to many threats including over fishing, pollution, habitat alternation, global climate change, etc. The biodiversity has been, therefore, seriously threatened, especially in the Mekong lower basin.

The ICCGMRB aims to bring together leading academic scientists, researchers, policy makers, and government officers from the outside and the Mekong river basin countries to exchange and share their experiences and study of conservation genetics in the Mekong river basin. It also provides a premier interdisciplinary forum for researchers, managers, and practitioners to present and discuss the most recent innovations, trends, concerns, and practical challenges and the solutions adopted in the fields of biodiversity conservation and resource management in the Mekong river basin. Besides, the Conference helps broaden opportunities for Vietnamese scientists to develop cooperation in research with partners all over the world.

The content of the ICCGMRB 2017 focuses on applied genetics in natural resource management and biodiversity conservation; climate change and adaptive solutions in the management and conservation of aquatic resources; ecology and risks to biodiversity and resources; and fisheries management.
