The 4th International Conference Agricultural Science 2024: "Climate-Smart and Resilient Agriculture for Sustainable Development"

On September 28th, 2024, Can Tho University (CTU) hosted the 4th International Conference on Agricultural Science 2024, with the theme "Climate-Smart and Resilient Agriculture for Sustainable Development." Attending the event were Dr. Do Tien Phat, Head of the Plant Cell Technology Department at the Institute of Biotechnology, Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology; representatives from universities in the United States, Japan, and Thailand; as well as scientists and experts from Vietnam and abroad. Representing CTU were Assoc. Prof. Dr. Le Van Vang, Dean of the School of Agriculture, and leaders, teaching staff, and students of CTU’s units.

 Overview of the Conference

The conference aimed to share and update scientific and technological knowledge on smart agriculture, climate change adaptation, and sustainable land use management. The program featured key presentations on topics such as soil health, integrated pest management, sustainable agriculture, and innovations in livestock farming and animal health, all geared toward modern, sustainable agriculture that aligns with environmental protection.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Le Van Vang in his opening remarks

In his opening remarks, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Le Van Vang emphasized: "Through the working sessions and reports presented at the conference, experts will gain insights and learn about new solutions for smart agriculture, focusing on increasing productivity, ensuring sustainability, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and improving resource-use efficiency. These efforts contribute to ensuring food security, preserving biodiversity, and mitigating soil degradation and climate change. I hope the 4th International Conference on Agricultural Science 2024 will serve as an effective platform for researchers, policymakers, industry leaders, and students to exchange knowledge, present advanced research, and introduce innovative solutions."

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Chau Minh Khoi, Vice Dean of the School of Agriculture reported on "Sustainable Rice Production to Cope with the Emerging Challenges and Climate Change in the Mekong Delta"

Prof. Tsutomu Arie from Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology (Japan) reported on "Impact and Control of the Transboundary Banana wilt Pathogen, Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense"

Mr. Kasem Rattanapinyopituk from the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Chulalongkorn University (Thailand) reported on "Veterinary Diagnostic Techniques: Where We are Now and Future Trends?"

Assoc. Prof. Scott Demyan from Ohio State University (USA) reported on "Soil Organic Matter at The Crux pff Land-Based Solutions for Climate Change; A Critical Examination"

Dr. Do Tien Phat reported on "Application of CRISPR/Cas Systems to Enhance Biotic and Abiotic Stress Resistance of important Crops in Vietnam"

Prof. Dr. Duong Nguyen Khang from Nong Lam University, Ho Chi Minh City reported on "Translating Science into Policy to shift Agriculture towards Circular, Low-Carbon Systems with a Focus on Reducing Emission in Animal Production"

Mr. Gerry Oude Elferink from De Heus reported on "Alternative Protein Sources for the Animal Feed Industry."

In addition to the main session presentations, six parallel sessions were held on topics such as: "Soil Health for Climate Resilience and Sustainable Agriculture”, “Integrated Pest Management in Sustainable Agriculture”, “Metabolic Alterations Gene Regulation in Plant under Stress,” “Sustainable Crop Production”, “Navigating Challenges and Innovations in Production for Sustainable Agricultural”, and “Advanced Implications in Diagnosis and Treatment of Animal Diseases.”

The 4th International Conference on Agricultural Science 2024 concluded successfully, marking an important step in promoting research collaboration, knowledge exchange, and the search for sustainable agricultural development solutions between CTU and scientists and experts both domestically and internationally. The presentations, combined with the discussions and questions from the delegates, offered diverse perspectives and innovative solutions to address climate change, enhance productivity, and improve the quality of agricultural products, contributing to the development of a modern and sustainable agricultural system.
