Can Tho University Celebrates the Opening Ceremony of the 2024-2025 Academic Year: Affirming its Position, Moving Forward with Success

Amidst the joyous atmosphere of the education sector welcoming the new academic year, and with a spirit of excitement, pride, and continuous efforts toward progress and development, Can Tho University (CTU) solemnly held the Opening Ceremony for the 2024-2025 academic year on September 19th, 2024. This program was not only an opportunity to reflect on the outstanding achievements of the previous year, but it also marked an important milestone, signaling the beginning of a journey towards comprehensive innovation and development, with higher goals set for the year ahead.

The program was attended by representatives from the High Command and Department of Political Affairs of Military Zone 9; Party Committees, People's Committees of provinces, cities, districts; local departments, and agencies; institutes, universities in the Mekong Delta region. At CTU’s side were Prof. Dr. Nguyen Thanh Phuong, Secretary of the Party Committee, Chairman of the Board of Trustees, along with members of the Board of Trustees; Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tran Trung Tinh, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee and Rector, along with members of the Board of Directors; and former leaders, lecturers, staff, and learners of CTU’s units.

In the 2023-2024 academic year, CTU's leaders, units, and lecturers and staff diligently achieved their goals and reached significant milestones across various fields, establishing a solid foundation for the university to complete its development strategy for the 2021-2025 period, outlook 2030. This includes affirming its strengths in education quality, scientific research, technology transfer, and the enhancement of human resources.

Regarding education, CTU successfully completed its 2024 undergraduate admissions with 9,315 enrolled students, achieving 97.1% of its target, bringing the total number of students to 37,741, including 35,366 undergraduates, 2,114 master’s students, and 261 doctoral candidates. Additionally, the university introduced five new undergraduate programs and seven postgraduate programs to meet societal demands. The graduate employment rate reached 95.34%.

In terms of quality assurance, CTU completed the accreditation process and was recognized for meeting the national education quality standards for the 2nd cycle (December 29th, 2023-December 28th, 2028). During the 2023-2024 academic year, the university successfully accredited nine academic programs according to the Ministry of Education and Training standards and 16 programs according to AUN-QA standards, bringing the total number of accredited programs to 52. CTU was also honored as one of nine educational institutions in Vietnam included in the global university rankings by US News & World Report.

Regarding scientific research and technology transfer, CTU’s lecturers, staffs are implementing 15 government-level research topics, 53 ministry-level research topics, 71 provincial-level projects topics, and 222 university-level research topics. CTU allocated over 5 billion VND for learner research, supporting 351 learner research projects during the 2023-2024 academic year.

In international cooperation, CTU hosted over 300 delegations with nearly 2,000 international guests and is currently implementing 54 international projects with total funding of over 90 billion VND. Furthermore, 460 students participated in short-term exchange programs abroad at 44 partner institutions in 11 countries.

In terms of staff and organizational development, CTU currently has 1,889 staff members, including 1,075 lecturers, of whom 612 hold doctoral degrees (the percentage of PhDs reached 56.9%, significantly higher than the national average of 33%), along with 20 professors and 166 associate professors. The CTU’s staff continues to grow both in quantity and quality, significantly contributing to CTU’s mission to advance the comprehensive development of the Mekong Delta region.

In his speech at the opening ceremony, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tran Trung Tinh warmly welcomed 9,315 students of cohort 50 to the CTU family and shared: “You should feel confident, creative, and daring in exploring new challenges. Participate in extracurricular activities, clubs, and programs to broaden your horizons and hone your skills. Always remember that your teachers, friends, and the CTU community are here to support you. With a student-centered approach and the educational philosophy of “For the Community, Tatally, Uniqueness” along with our core values of “Consensus - Devotion - Quality – Innovation” CTU is committed to creating a modern, friendly learning environment that enables students to fully develop their potential and contribute positively to the university, localities, and the country.

In his congratulatory speech at CTU's opening ceremony for the new academic year, Mr. Duong Tan Hien recognized and highly praised the outstanding achievements of CTU in the past academic year. He shared: "The People's Committee of Can Tho City hopes that CTU will continue to leverage its potential, expand its training programs, and enhance the quality of teaching, research, and technology transfer to meet societal needs in the current context. We also expect businesses within and outside the city to continue accompanying CTU, creating job opportunities for students after graduation. The leaders of Can Tho City are always supportive and provide the best conditions for CTU to continue its sustainable development, affirming its position as a leading center for education and research in the Mekong Delta region and nationwide. The People's Committee also hopes that CTU will expand its cooperation with businesses and organizations both domestically and internationally, constantly innovating to train high-quality human resources to meet the demands of socio-economic development in the new context."

Quality assurance and accreditation have been identified as top priorities for CTU. Special attention has been given to the evaluation and accreditation of academic programs both nationally and internationally. In the 2023-2024 academic year, CTU proudly received 12 additional academic program quality certificates from the ASEAN University Network-Quality Assurance (AUN-QA) and 10 from the MOET. As of September 19th, 2024, CTU has 28 academic programs accredited by the MOET (including two master's programs) and 37 programs accredited by AUN-QA (including six master's programs, with three certificates being part of the 2nd cycle).
