On August 8th, 2023, Can Tho University (CTU) held a signing ceremony of the Declaration of Cooperation and Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology (TUMSAT), Japan. The ceremony was attended by representatives of JICA Vietnam Office, the delegation of TUMSAT, leaders of CTU and representatives of CTU’s units.
The ceremony took place at the Administration Building, CTU |
Located in the center of the Mekong Delta, CTU was founded in 1966. The University’s mission is to focus on training, conducting research, and transferring technology to serve the sustainable development of the Mekong Delta region. CTU aims to strengthen its reputation to become one of the best universities in Viet Nam, to be recognized throughout Asia-Pacific as an excellent education and research institution, and towards global integration.
Prof. Dr. Ha Thanh Toan sent a warm welcome and gave a brief introduction of CTU to the delegations |
CTU has got approximately 1.800 staff members including nearly 1.100 teaching staff. In total, we have more than 46,000 students learning and doing research in 109 bachelor programs, 48 master programs, and 20 Ph.D. programs. Its strengths concentrate on agriculture, aquaculture, environment, and technology because it is located in the delta which mainly produces rice, fish, shrimp, and fruits for the whole nation and for exporting. Every year, the University has around 300 local and international research projects with around 90 billion VND to support for Mekong Delta region.
It's the University’s pleasure to see the long history of the close-knit cooperation between CTU and Japanese partners, especially, the support from the Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA) from 1969. Recently, there were two full-filled projects including CTU Improvement Project by ODA loan; and the Technical Cooperation (TC) Project for building capacity for CTU to be an excellent institution of education, scientific research, and technology transfer. They all serve the sustainable development of the Mekong Delta and the region. In addition, CTU has signed 72 MoU and MoA with 40 Japan universities, companies, and industrial corporations. It is an upward trend in studying in Japan of CTU’s staff and students.
The close-knit relationship between TUMSAT and CTU was established through the first Joint Declaration of Cooperation signed in 2012. Until now, both universities haven’t stopped striving to encourage joint collaborations in many ways. There were 2 MoU and 2 MoA of student exchange signed. Furthermore, in the JICA-CTU Project, CTU appreciates the significant collaboration of TUMSAT. Among 36 scientific research programs, there are 6 programs with the participation of Professors from TUMSAT. In the TC2 Project, TUMSAT professors contribute to the 2 main research models related to aquaculture development in the Mekong Delta. Especially, Prof. Yuji Tanaka is the Chief Advisor of the TC2 Project. Therefore, CTU has more and more opportunities to cooperate with new Japanese partners and gain positive results.
Dr. Toshio Iseki, President of TUMSAT, reviewed briefly the cooperation activities between the two universities |
