The Mekong Delta is a key region for the production of food, aquatic products and fruits in the country. Located in the central of the Mekong Delta, Can Tho University plays an important role in the development of the region. In the new with opportunities and challenges, along with the Party and Government's strategic orientation for regional sustainable development, Can Tho University, with its resources and mission, has presided over the Forum on the Sustainable Development of the Mekong Delta - Vision 2045 (SDMD 2045) to connect and cooperate with domestic and foreign stakeholders to integrate national and international collaborative research and development activities, with the goal of contribution to the sustainable development of the Mekong Delta region with a vision to the year of 2045.
In the framework of SDMD 2045 Forum, on June 30th, 2022, Can Tho University hosted a live seminar on "Science and Technology for Sustainable Development of Aquaculture and Fisheries in the Mekong Delta". Attending the Forum were Mr. Iwasaki Akihiro, JICA Tokyo, Japan; Prof. Tanaka Yuji, Chief Advisor of the Technical Cooperation Project - Phase 2; Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Nguyen Minh, representative of CSIRO, Australia; Dr. Tran Dinh Luan, Director General of Directorate of Fisheries; Dr. Nguyen Thanh Tung, Director of Research Institute for Aquaculture No. 2; Dr. Cao Thang Binh, representative of World Bank Vietnam; Mr. Ngo Tien Chuong, representative of GIZ Vietnam; Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Huu Dung, Chairman of the Vietnam Seaculture Association; and managers, scientists from agencies, departments, institutes, universities, enterprises and associations in the Mekong Delta region. The present world is entering the era of rapid, incessant and powerful development of the scientific - technological revolution, especially The Fourth Industrial Evolution; the era of globalization, of integration - collaboration and development, notably the development of knowledge-based economy. Besides, the world is also facing great global challenges such as food security and safety, climate change and sea level rise, degradation of resources and environment, pandemics,… As a result, promoting collaboration is an inevitable trend to solve regional and global issues. For the Mekong Delta region, this is a key area for the production of food, aquatic food, fruits of the country; ensure national food security and play an important role in exporting agricultural and aquatic products to the world’s market. Facing the challenges of climate change, sea level rise and changes in the flow of Mekong Delta River as well as the need to promote strength for the prosperous development of the region, Resolution no. 120 of The Government (November 17th, 2017) on Sustainable development of the Mekong Delta under climate change had set a goal toward the year 2050 “The Mekong Delta becomes a highly developed region of the nation, and has an advanced level of social organization; per capita income is higher than the national average, people’s livelihood is secured; the share of ecological agriculture, high technology agriculture rate reaches over 80%, forest covering rate is over 9% (compared to current rate of 4.3%), important natural ecosystems are preserved and developed.
To contribute to the successful implementation of guidelines and policies of the Communist Party and the Government, synchronous and appropriate solutions are required, in which there is a very important role of Central Agencies/ Departments of all levels and Local Communities; Institutes – Universities, enterprises and social organization through activities of collaboration. At the Third Conference of Mekong Delta Sustainable Development under Climate Change, on 13th March 2021 in Can Tho, The Former Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc said: “Entrust Can Tho University to organize dialogues for all to contribute together to a Sustainable Development of the Mekong Delta toward 2045”.

SDMD 2045 is an initiatetive established and hosted by Can Tho University to integrate national and international collaborative research and development activities, with the goal of contribution to the suistainable development of the mekong Delta region with a vision to the year 2045. The Forum is being started with many activities. Firstly, the international SDMD forum will be held every two years, and SDMD 2022 is the first forum to be held on October 30th, 2022 at Can Tho University. Secondly, regular live seminars will be held every quarter, specifically in March, June, September and December each year with various topics. In the first quarter of 2022, a regular live seminar was held on March 25th, 2022 on "Science and Technology for Sustainable Development of Agriculture in the Mekong Delta".
The second live seminar is on "Science and Technology for Sustainable Development of Aquaculture and Fisheries in the Mekong Delta" hosted by Can Tho University, and co-hosted by JICA Vietnam, CSIRO, GIZ, World Bank, Research Institute for Aquaculture No. 2, Directorate of Fisheries; Cuu Long Delta Rice Research Institute, Southern Horticultural Research Institute, and Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy. At the seminar, the delegates reported and discussed the development trend of high-tech and sustainable Aquaculture, new achievements in science and technology in the field of Aquaculture and Fisheries. These reports served as a basis for more detailed discussion on the ability of Can Tho University and other institutions to meet the demand for science and technology; opportunities for cooperation in research, consulting, and technology transfer of aquatic products for localities and enterprises. The fruitful sharing and discussions at the seminar have revealed the current status, potentials, challenges and proposed solutions to develop the Aquaculture and Fisheries sector in the Mekong Delta, playing a role as a basis for the formulation of strategies and policies for sustainable development of the Mekong Delta with a vision to 2045.
