Researchers shared their research and experiences in raising Artemia |
It is known that Artemia is a very small crustacean living in salty water, used as fresh live food for aquaculture production, particularly essential in feeding aquatic species at their larval stage. In fact, the demand of Artemia for aquaculture activites in the world has been increasing, but the amount of Artemia cysts and eggs collected from the nature can not meet the need. Meanwhile, growing Artemia in aquaculture ponds is very popular in the Mekong Delta of Vietnam even though Artemia is only the imported species. College of Aquaculture and Fisheries of CTU has been successful in testing and implementing to breed Artemia in aquaculture ponds in provinces of Bac Lieu, Soc Trang, Ninh Thuan and Binh Thuan. Although Artemia has been being raising in many countries in Asia and Latin America, only in Vietnam the raising of Artemia can be managed with high productivity and quality. Therefore, the workshop was purposeful to share experiences in research, implementation and mass production of Artemia species in Vietnam and other countries and to address the challenge in the need of fresh food for aquatic life in the future.
As planned, the workshop takes place from March 19th to March 21st 2012. Before the official opening, the researchers from other countries had got the opportunity to visit directly the experimental farms of CTU and breeding ponds of farmers in two provinces of Bac Lieu and Soc Trang.
