Can Tho University Improvement project has been implemented to strengthening CTU to become excellent, internationally recognized university in the fields of agriculture, aquaculture and fisheries, environment and related fields, contributing to the socio-economic development, adaptation to climate change, environmental protection, increase of the value of agricultural and fishery products in the Mekong Delta. Also, the project will contribute to strengthening the capacity of CTU’s high-quality human resource training, the improvement of scientific research in the fields of agriculture, aquaculture and fisheries, environment and other fields. The project is funded by ODA loans form of the Government of Japan with a total budget of over 100 million USD and implemented from 2015 to 2022. The five components of the project include development of human resources, implementation of joint research programs, facility construction, equipment procurement, and consulting services.
Within the framework of the project, the "Implementation of Joint Research Programs" Component will carry out 36 scientific research programs, focusing on 3 areas of agriculture, fisheries and environment. According to the plan, these research programs will be implemented from 2017 to 2021 and divided into 3 phases, kick-off (6 programs), 1st batch (16 programs) and 2nd batch (14 programs).
On January 31st, 2018, The Project Management Unit (PMU) organized the ceremony to sign the contract for implementation of 14 research programs (1st batch), which will be carried out in 03 years (2018 - 2020) with the total budget of over 35 billion VND.

On November 22nd, 2018, the Universiry held the contract signing ceremony to carry out research programs (2nd batch). The ceremony was attended by Prof.Dr. Ha Thanh Toan, Rector, Project Owner; Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tran Trung Tinh, Vice Rector, Director of PMU; Prof. Tsunoda Manabu, Chief Advisor of the Project; Representatives of PMU, Project Coordinators, leaders of related units, leaders and members of 15 research programs.
Accordingly, 15 research programs in the 2nd batch (including 06 agricultural programs, 03 aquacultural programs and 06 programs in the field of environment) will be implemented in 03 years (10/2018 - 9/2021) with a total budget of over 29 billion VND. As a result, the the "Implementation of Joint Research Programs" Component has implemented 35 out of 36 research programs.

Speaking at the ceremony, Prof. Dr. Ha Thanh Toan, Rector, Project Owner affirmed the importance of the successful implementation of the components of the Project, especially the Component "Implementation of Joint Research Programs". The Rector would like the leaders of the research programs to focus on building the research team, following the plan, coordinating closely with the PMU, CTU's departments, especially with experts and professors of the Japanese partner universities for the smooth implementation of the research programs, thereby transferring the results of research to the local, strengthening international publication, improving the quality of human resources as well as the quality of training of the University, contributing to obtaininig the objectives of the Project.

Prof. Tsunoda Manabu, Chief Advisor of the Project, expressed his pleasure at the fact that the Component "Implementation of Joint Research Programs" has chosen research programs to be implemented within the framework of the Project. He appreciated the efforts of the units and individuals involved in the Project. He shared that during the implementation of the projects, the research teams may encounter many obstacles, but with the support of JICA, partners, PMU, all research programs will be done as planned, bringing high efficiency, contributing to the development of CTU in particular and the Mekong Delta and the country in general.
