Celebrating the 59th Anniversary of Can Tho University

On March 31, 2025, Can Tho University (CTU) solemnly held the 59th Anniversary Celebration (March 31, 1966 – March 31, 2025) and the Commendation Conference for the 2020-2025 period, marking a journey of continuous development and significant contributions to education and human resource training for Vietnam. Attending the program were members of the CTU Council, the Board of Rectorate, representatives of former and current leaders of the Party, government, and organizations at all levels of CTU, sponsors, as well as a large number of faculty members, staff, and students. The event was also broadcast live on the CTU’s digital platforms, including YouTube and Facebook.

Overview the event

In his speech at the event, Prof. Dr. Nguyen Thanh Phuong, Secretary of the Party Committee and Chairman of the CTU Council, shared: "I always remember the words of Mr. Pham Son Khai, who was entrusted with leading CTU in its early days after the liberation. He initially served as Head of the Leadership Committee, later became Vice Rector in charge in 1977, Rector in 1982, and retired in 1989. He once said a phrase that was passed down when encouraging graduates to stay at the university as lecturers: “Teaching with what you've just learned,” meaning that those who graduate from university should teach at the university level—whatever knowledge they acquire, they should pass it on. Thanks to this mindset, many generations of lecturers strived to improve themselves and later became highly specialized, contributing to the continued development of Can Tho University. To this day, I have spent 43 years at CTU (nearly three-fourths of CTU history) and have witnessed the tremendous efforts of lecturers, staff, students, and researchers. These efforts have resulted in great achievements for our university.”

Prof. Dr. Nguyen Thanh Phuong delivered a speech at the ceremony

Over the past 59 years, CTU has continuously developed, affirming its position in the national and regional higher education system. CTU has undergone several key organizational changes, notably in 1995 when it restructured by merging smaller faculties into larger ones according to fields of study, streamlining administrative departments. Since then, CTU has continued to evolve, establishing new units to meet the demands of educational development.

Currently, CTU aims to transition from university to university system by 2025, marking 30 years since its last restructuring. This transformation aims to build a well-structured foundation, strengthening its role as a regional university in alignment with Decision No. 452/QD-TTg issued on February 27, 2025, by the Prime Minister on approving the higher education and teacher training institution network planning for 2021-2030, with a vision toward 2050.
According to the ranking published by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) on December 10, 2024, Can Tho University proudly ranks among the top 10 universities in Vietnam and falls within the 1,061-1,080 group in the world’s most sustainable universities ranking for 2025. Additionally, CTU continues to excel in education by being ranked 351-400 globally in the Agriculture and Forestry field according to the QS rankings.
These outstanding achievements demonstrate the strong progress of CTU in education, scientific research, community engagement, and promoting sustainable development in the Mekong Delta region.
