The year 2024 marked a significant milestone in Can Tho University's journey of growth and innovation, solidifying its commitment to the educational philosophy of "Community - Totality - Uniqueness." Let's reflect on 10 outstanding achievements in this year:

Education and Training

The scale of education and training continues to expand
Can Tho University launched and admitted students into 11 new training programs across technology, science, education, and economics at undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral levels. These training programs met the workforce demand for emerging industries and provided diverse learning opportunities, equipping students with solid knowledge and future readiness.


In the 2024 admissions, Can Tho University enrolled 9,583 full-time undergraduate students, 1,122 master’s students, and 78 PhD students. Additionally, 1,283 students were admitted to part-time undergraduate programs, while 2,784 enrolled in part-time distance learning undergraduate.

 

 

Science and Technology

Enhancing scientific research activities
In 2024, Can Tho University’s lecturers and staff conducted 195 provincial-level projects, while students undertook 395  projects. Nine projects were under the Nafosted, 22 national-level and ministry-level projects, and 21 collaborative projects with businesses and localities. Moreover, Can Tho University signed nine consulting and technology transfer contracts and submitted 11 intellectual property applications. In addition, the University holds two exclusive utility solution patents, one plant variety protection certificate, and eight decisions of valid application acceptance. Technology transfer activities generated a total revenue of 15,431 million VND.

 

 

Community Engagement

The 2nd SDMD International Forum 2024 – a milestone for Can Tho University in advancing regional sustainable development

On November 29, 2024, Can Tho University, in collaboration with the People’s Committee of Can Tho City, hosted the 2nd International Forum on Sustainable Development of the Mekong Delta (SDMD 2024) under the theme “Industrialization - Modernization: Driving Force for Sustainable Development of the Mekong Delta.” The event featured representatives from the government, international organizations, and nearly 100 domestic and international businesses. A declaration of cooperation between the Mekong Delta’s 13 provinces/cities and Can Tho University for the SDMD 2045 Forum was announced, reinforcing the university’s pioneering role in regional sustainable development.

SDMD 2024 also featured the Declaration of Collaboration between the 13 provinces of the Mekong Delta and Can Tho University to jointly organize the SDMD 2045 Forum. Under this agreement, Can Tho University and the People’s Committees of the Mekong Delta provinces will co-host the International SDMD Forum every two years in different localities.

The success of the SDMD 2024 Forum once again underscores Can Tho University's pioneering role in fostering knowledge connections and driving sustainable development in the region.

 

 

Lecturer Quality Advancement

Can Tho University lead the nation in the number of professors and associate professors for two consecutive years

In 2024, Can Tho University welcomed 04 new professors and 22 new associate professors recognized as meeting standards. For two consecutive years (2023 and 2024), the University has topped the nation's number of professors and associate professors among higher education institutions, reaffirming its pioneering role in cultivating elite lecturers and staff.

To date, Can Tho University boasts 24 professors and 182 associate professors. This achievement enhances the quality of education and research and solidifies the University's core role in driving economic and social development in the Mekong Delta region and across the nation.

 

 

Supporting students' development

Confidently integrate into the international community and make their mark in intellectual competitions

In 2024, Can Tho University sent 548 students to participate in exchange programs in 12 countries, with the highest number in Thailand (193 students), Taiwan (140 students), Malaysia (73 students), Japan (43 students), and Indonesia (40 students). At the same time, the University hosted 394 international students and researchers for exchange, interaction, and study. Notably, the University’s Tropical Studies Program attracted 119 students from universities in the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, Japan, and South Korea.

Can Tho University students also achieved outstanding results in various competitions, including: winning the Procon championship, two second-place awards, shared third place (Super Cup, ICPC Regional), and several honorable mentions at the 33rd Vietnam Student Olympiad in Informatics, Procon Vietnam, and ICPC Asia Hanoi 2024; winning the overall championship with six first-place awards and one honorable mention at the 26th National Physics Olympiad for Students; earning one second-place award and one honorable mention at the Euréka 2024 Student Research Awards; securing two first-place awards and three second-place awards at the 2024 Science and Technology Awards for young lecturers and students; and receiving "Excellent Team" and four individual awards at the 4th Vietnamese Student Biology Olympiad.

 

 

Quality Assurance

Meeting national and international education standards

At Can Tho University, ensuring the quality of education through accreditation and quality assurance is considered one of the top priorities. In 2024, the University successfully conducted four rounds of training program quality assessment, including 16 academic programs according to the Ministry of Education and Training standards and eight according to the AUN-QA standards. These training program quality assessments underscore the university's dedication to providing students with comprehensive training programs that equip them with the knowledge and skills necessary to thrive in a competitive world.

 

 

International Collaboration

Continuing to strengthen international cooperation and expand its global partnership network
Can Tho University has solidified its position in the international community. In 2024 alone, the University welcomed 348 delegations, comprising 1,651 international visitors, for work, exchange, research, and study purposes. 

As of December 2024, Can Tho University has signed 18 Memoranda of Understanding and Agreements with institutes, universities, organizations, and enterprises from Asia, Europe, and America, with a majority of partners from Japan (5 units), Thailand (4 units), Taiwan (3 units), and France (2 units). Additionally, the University has renewed existing partnerships to accelerate ongoing projects and strengthen friendly relations and cooperation in education and technology transfer.

 

 

Regarding University Management

leveling up the School of Education as a specialized university

The establishment of the School of Education, a new specialized university unit within Can Tho University (where the “School of Education” previously denoted a “Faculty”), is a testament to its growth and development over the past 58 years. With a mission to train high-quality human resources for the education sector, the School of Education has produced over 50,000 teachers, meeting the manpower needs of the Mekong Delta region and driving the comprehensive development of education nationwide. The leveling up of the School of Education as a specialized university significantly contributes to achieving sustainable development goals, international integration, and building a progressive education system that meets society's expectations in the new era.

Can Tho University has made remarkable strides in its digital transformation. Most of its management, administration, and teaching activities are now conducted through an integrated information system, the MyCTU mobile application, and the CTU e-Office electronic office system. The university has also intensified the use of digital signatures in its operations and encouraged all teaching staff to register for digital signatures, moving closer to its goal of becoming a smart university.

 

 

Infrastructure Development

Officially received Facilities - ready to establish a Branch Campus in Soc Trang
Can Tho University has officially received the facilities for its new campus in Soc Trang, marking a significant step forward in its plan to expand its education and research network. The Ministry of Education and Training has approved the establishment of campuses in both Hau Giang and Soc Trang provinces, meeting the growing demand for education and research in the region. This development will allow local students to pursue higher education closer to home, reducing costs and travel time. The Soc Trang campus is poised to become a prestigious center for education, training, scientific research, and technology transfer in Soc Trang and neighboring provinces.

 

 

Regarding Finances

Enhancing Support for Students
Total revenue in 2024 of Can Tho University reached VND 1,000 billion, ensuring adequate financial resources for educational activities, scientific research, and infrastructure development.

In particular, the University has allocated significant funds to support students. Specifically, the University has decided to waive tuition fees for 5,283 students, awarded scholarships to 3,826 students with a total amount of nearly VND 27 billion, and granted sponsored scholarships to 907 students with a total of almost VND 6.2 billion.

 

Conclusion

Can Tho University's standing has been increasingly enhanced, as recognized by both domestic and international communities through prestigious global rankings. In the 2025 Quacquarelli Symonds Asia University Rankings and University Sustainability Rankings, Can Tho University has surged to the 521-540 band, an improvement of over 130 places compared to the previous year. This places the University in the 90th position in Southeast Asia and among the top 1,061-1,080 most sustainable universities worldwide. In Agriculture & Aquaculture, the University has climbed to the 301-350 band. Moreover, Can Tho University is among nine Vietnamese institutions recognized in the U.S. News & World Report's ranking of the world's best universities.

 

With these outstanding achievements, Can Tho University affirms its pioneering role in education, scientific research, and technology transfer, contributing to the sustainable development of the Mekong Delta and the entire country.
