The first Joint Coordination Committee Meeting on Technical Cooperation Project

With the aim of building capacity for Can Tho University (CTU) in three fields (agriculture, aquaculture, and environment) to be an internationally recognized institution of education, scientific research and technology transfer, contributing to value-added agriculture and aquaculture, and solution of environmental issues of the Mekong Delta region, Technical Cooperation Project using Japan Government’s non-refundable aid has been implemented since March 2016. Main components of the Project are joint research, development of education programs, and enhancement of administration systems.

On September 28^th, 2017, CTU, in collaboration with JICA, held the first joint coordination committee meeting with JICA Tokyo via online video. The objectives of the meeting was to review the results of the project from March 2016 to September 2017, to evaluate the progress of the project, and to review Project Design Matrix and Plan Operation and propose for revision.

At the meeting, Prof. Tetsu Ando, Chief Advisor, presented the overview and outline of the Project, then, the report on the progress of the Project and the forthcoming plan were delivered by Dr. Pham Minh Duc, Project Management Unit of CTU. Based on the assessment, discussion among the parties, solutions for solving difficulties and future plan were proposed.

In the framework of Technical Cooperation Project, there are 4 scientific research projects being implemented (two projects in agriculture, one in fisheries and one in environment fields). These projects will last for 2 years with the cost of 1 billion VND per project. They are supported by nine Japanese universities with new ideas and technologies applied. The results of scientific research projects are expected to contribute to addressing a number of climate change-related issues for the fields of agriculture and aquaculture, adaptation to climate change, protection the environment, increasing the value of agriculture and aquaculture in the Mekong Delta.

For building new master programs in English, CTU has opened 3 new programs in the fields of agriculture, aquaculture, and environment, specifically, Climate Change and Sustainable Tropical Agriculture, Climate Change and Integrated Management of Coastal Aquaculture and Fisheries, and Climate Change and Delta Management.
