Meeting with JICA for the Progress Review of the Technical Cooperation Project - Phase 2

On 30th March 2023, Can Tho University (CTU) had a meeting with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) to review the progress of the Technical Cooperation Project - Phase 2 (TC2). The delegates attending the meeting were Mr. Watanabe Motoharu, Education Senior Expert; Ms. Hisamatsu Ayane, Deputy Assistant Director; Mr. Tsuchimoto Amane, Representative of JICA Vietnam Office; Prof. Ishimatsu Atsushi, Academic Advisor of the TC2; Mr. Iseri Nobuyuki, the Project Coordinator. On the CTU side, were the Rectorate Board; the Project Task Force Members from the field of Agriculture, Aquaculture/Fisheries and Environment; the representatives from CTU departments, Colleges; the Project Management Unit, and the leaders of 12 research models. In particular, the meeting was attended online by Prof. Tanaka Yuji, the Project Chief Advisor, and 12 Japanese co-leaders of technology transfer activities.

The meeting is to evaluate the results of the TC2 project progress, including the New Master Course of Smart Agriculture; SDMD Outlook, as well as the progress of 12 research models. From the regular evaluation meeting, JICA, CTU and stakeholders can promptly share information and resolve arising issues. Therefore, the deep connection and understanding can be strengthened so that the shared goals can be achieved.

Speaking at the ceremony, Prof. Dr. Ha Thanh Toan, Rector of CTU, emphasized that the TC2 project is a token of a long-term collaboration between JICA and CTU, as well as the friendship between Japan and Viet Nam, in general. From the successful foundation of the JICA projects in the 1960s to the most recent TC1 Project, and the CTU Improvement Project, CTU is grateful that the TC2 project can further prolong this valuable connection.

Mr. Tsuchimoto Amane, Representative of JICA Vietnam Office, expected that that all the stakeholders work closely with each other and with CTU as a knowledge hub, and confront climate change in the Mekong Delta region. JICA will remain as a close partner for CTU and the Mekong Delta region and continue the journey with CTU for contributing to the sustainable social and economic development of the Mekong Delta region.

At the meeting, Mr. Watanabe Motoharu, Education Senior Expert, JICA, expressed his appreciation for CTU’s strident efforts to implement this project. He recognized that CTU members, the Japanese supporting universities, and the project team, have collaborated and made great efforts to promote this project in a positive direction. Sustainable development under Climate Change is an urgent issue, and JICA is actively working to address these issues with stakeholders. It is believed that CTU will continue to serve as a hub for the Mekong Delta region and will have the capability to implement integrated collaboration to secure climate-change adaptation. For this purpose, Mr. Watanabe hopes that CTU will make effective use of the research facilities established by the CTU Improvement Project, and joint activities will lead to a strengthened relationship between CTU and its Japanese counterparts.
