Celebrating the 57th year of Can Tho University (1966--2023)

On March 31st, 2023, Can Tho University (CTU) held a meeting to celebrate the 57th anniversary of its establishment (March 31st, 1966 - March 31st, 2023).

Attending the meeting were members of the Board of Trustees, the Rectorate Board, leader representatives of the University’s units, especially, the former Rector of CTU. The meeting was live-streamed on CTU’s fanpage (https://www.facebook.com/CTUDHCT).

The meeting took place at the Rectorate Board Hall, the Administrative Building 

In the opening remark, Prof. Dr. Ha Thanh Toan, Rector of CTU, reviewed the development stages of the University and its achievements, thereby affirming CTU’s role in the socio-economic development of the Mekong Delta region in particular and the country in general.

Accordingly, CTU, formerly Can Tho Institute of Higher Learning (Vien Dai hoc Can Tho), was established on March 31st, 1966, starting with 4 faculties, 197 staff members, and over 1,000 students. During the development process, CTU constantly inherits and promotes its achievements. To date, the University has 51 units, including 16 academic units with over 2,000 staff members, including more than 1,000 lecturers, 18 professors, 163 associate professors, and the percent of lecturers achieving doctorate degrees is over 53%. Besides, the university currently has 117 undergraduate programs, 51 master's programs, and 21 doctoral programs with about 47,000 students. Each year, the University has provided society with about 10,000 graduates. It can be said that CTU is the cradle of training high-quality human resources for the region and the country.

TTo address regional, national and global social-economic development and sustainable challenges, Can Tho University has, CTU orients its activities in the next five years with a vision to 2035 as follows: developing the model of an autonomous university, renovating the towards a smart university; improving teaching quality in line with new developments and the needs of society; strengthening scientific research and technology, and publications; expanding cooperation with domestic and international educational scientific and technological organizations; developing the quality of staff members; developing and making use of facilities and equipment to meet the needs of a smart university.

Prof. Dr. Nguyen Thanh Phuong emphasized the role of CTU’s Party Committee 

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tran Thuong Tuan, the former Secretary of CTU’s Party Committee, and the former Rector shared his experiences and enthusiasm for today teaching profession

Ms. Duong Thi Tuyen, Chairwoman of the University’s Labor Union reviewed the activities to promote the role of the Labor Union in taking care of the staff’s lives

Ms. Tran Thi Thuy Tien, Secretary of CTU’s Youth Union shared about practical activities of the Youth Union in guiding students to develop comprehensively, strengthen solidarity and development among students

 
 
 

On this occasion, leader representatives of CTU’s units proposed activities for the further development of the University in the coming time

Quality assurance and accreditation are identified as one of the top priority tasks of CTU. The implementation of international and domestic quality assessment and accreditation for study programs is particularly focused. On this occasion, CTU was pleased to receive the certificates of recognition for the study programs to meet AUN-QA standards and the Ministry of Education and Training’s. In addition, 3 individuals were honored with the title of Ministerial-level Emulation Fighter for their outstanding achievements in the academic years 2019-2020 and the 2021-2022.

Prof. Dr. Nguyen Thanh Phuong and Prof. Dr. Ha Thanh Toan sent the certificates of program recognition to School of Agriculture, College of Aquaculture and Fisheries, and College of Natural Sciences 

Representatives of the School of Law, and the College of Social Sciences and Humanities received the Certificate of program recognition from the Ministry of Education and Training 

Individuals received the title of Ministerial-level Emulation Fighter for their outstanding achievements
