Celebration of Vietnamese Teachers' Day and Ground-Breaking Ceremony for the Buildings under CTU Improvement Project

On November 20th, 2019, Can Tho University (CTU) solemnly held the Ceremony to celebrate Vietnamese Teachers' Day and break ground on research laboratory complex and advanced technology laboratory under CTU Improvement Project.

Attending the ceremony were representatives of JICA Vietnam, the joint venture of Nihon Sekkei and Nagecco, the contractors. On the side of CTU were Rectorate Board, leaders of CTU's units, lecturers and students.

"To be deferential towards teachers and respectful of morality" is a beautiful tradition of Vietnamese people, and teaching is always honored as the most noble profession. Promoting the good tradition of the country, the generations of staff and students of CTU have been striving for the constant development of the University. From the limitations of staff and facilities, up to now, CTU is one of the key universities of the country, with 15 colleges and schools, 3 research institutes, 19 centers, 15 departments and 01 company. There are 1,871 staff members including 11 professors, 130 associate professors, 444 PhDs, and 757 masters. The University offers 98 undergraduate, 48 master and 19 PhD programs for nearly 47,000 students. Each year, CTU provides about 12,000 graduates. It can be said that CTU is the cradle to train high quality human resources for the whole region and country.

Through 53 years of establishment and development, CTU has made great progress so far to become a center of training, research and technology transfer of the nation. The University is constantly completing the programs and improving the quality of training; strengthening scientific research and technology transfer. In addition, the University pays special attention to investment, expansion of facilities and equipment to facilitate its development. At present, the University is implementing CTU Improvement Project using Japanese Government's ODA loans worth 10,456 million Yen (equivalent to 105.9 million USD). Being implemented from July 2015 to December 2022 with the aim of  strengthening CTU to become excellent, internationally recognized university, the project consists of 5 components, development of human resources, implementation of joint research programs, facility construction, equipment procurement, and consulting services.

Speaking at the ceremony, Prof.Dr. Ha Thanh Toan, Rector, sent warm congratulation to all staff members and students. On this occasion, the Rector sent his sincere thanks to the support of the agencies and departments from the central to local levels, domestic and international organizations and individuals, along with the helpful and effective support of JICA. The Rector called on all staff members to constantly upgrade their capacity and professional qualifications to build the University. With the tradition of solidarity and dedication, CTU will definitely overcome all difficulties and challenges to take the University to new heights.

Speaking at the ceremony, Mr. Murooka Naomichi, Deputy Representative of JICA Vietnam, expressed his sincere congratulations to CTU's members. He shared that CTU is located at the center of the Mekong Delta and expected as “Think Tank” of the region and the excellent institution of education, scientific research and technology transfer. In this regard, strengthening the function of the University by both tangible and intangible ways is getting more and more important to achieve the social and economic development in the region. JICA is pleased to accompany CTU on its way to become the “Center of Excellence”, by supporting the construction of facilities and equipping for research lab complex, advanced technology laboratories, field test and hatchery. In connection with the new facilities to be constructed and advanced equipment to be installed, JICA is also providing assistance in a number research in the fields of environment, agriculture, aquaculture, as well as supporting training of PhD and Master candidates in partnered universities in Japan. He hoped that the new facilities will provide better environment for researchers and students of the University to develop knowledge and thinking on up-to-date topics, which will contribute to enhancing the sustainability and adaptability to climate change in the Mekong Delta.
