Can Tho University Welcomes the French Ambassador to Vietnam and Signs an MoU with the French Research Institute for Development (IRD)

On March 8th, 2025, Can Tho University (CTU) welcomed a delegation from the French Embassy in Vietnam, led by H.E. Olivier Brochet, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the French Republic to Vietnam. The delegation also included Dr. Sylvain Ouillon, Representative of the French National Research Institute for Sustainable Development (IRD) in Vietnam. At CTU’s side were Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tran Trung Tinh, Rector; Prof. Dr. Tran Ngoc Hai, Vice Rector; and leaders from relevant units.

Overview of the program

In his speech at the program, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tran Trung Tinh acknowledged the support of the French Government, partners, businesses, and experts for CTU over the years. The university is committed to continued collaboration with the French Government and its partners in promoting the sustainable development of the Mekong Delta region, particularly in key areas including education, scientific and technological development, and their applications in agriculture. Enhancing scientific research and applying technology in production are crucial for enabling the region to adapt to climate change and drive sustainable development.

On behalf of the delegation, H.E. Olivier Brochet expressed his sincere appreciation for the warm welcome from CTU. The Ambassador affirmed that in the future, France will continue to collaborate with CTU in joint initiatives to promote the sustainable development of the Mekong Delta.

CTU has a strong and sustainable cooperative relationship with French research organizations, especially IRD. The signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between CTU and IRD further affirms the close bond between the two parties over the past.

Currently, Can Tho University CTU is implementing 12 collaborative projects with a total budget of over 800,000 EUR (equivalent to approximately 22 billion VND). These projects focus on sustainable aquaculture, the development of learning environments, climate change adaptation, and agriculture. Some notable projects involve partners such as GEMMES Vietnam, the SIMPLE project with IRD, and the 3R project on climate-smart aquaculture in collaboration with CIRAD.

CTU has signed 23 Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with 15 universities and organizations in France, including the University of La Réunion, the University of Lille, the University of Tours, CIRAD, IRD, and many others. In particular, CTU has been a member of the Agence Universitaire de la Francophonie (AUF) since 1994 and has actively collaborated through various activities. AUF has supported CTU in French language teaching, bilingual programs, and the implementation of digital transformation and online training projects.

As part of the visit, the delegation from the French Embassy in Vietnam also met and worked with the French language lecturers of the School of Foreign Languages at CTU to discuss training and research directions in French studies and Francophonie-related programs, as well as to strengthen cooperation and academic exchange.
