Can Tho University signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the University of Liège (Kingdom of Belgium)

On the morning of April 5, 2025, at the Administration Building, Can Tho University (CTU) held a signing ceremony for a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in cooperation with the University of Liège (Kingdom of Belgium). Representing the University of Liège was Prof. Pierre Duysinx – Vice Rector – along with other members of the delegation. On behalf of CTU, Prof. Dr. Nguyen Thanh Phuong – Chairman of CTU Council, Dr. Le Van Lam – Vice Rector, and representatives from CTU’s unit were in attendance.

As part of the program, Dr. Le Van Lam provided an overview of CTU and shared that, over the years, CTU has implemented 23 joint research projects with Belgian partners. Among these, four projects have been carried out in collaboration with the University of Liège, focusing on sustainable aquaculture in the Mekong Delta. The Vice Rector emphasized that, based on the effective activities jointly conducted by both institutions, the signing of today’s MoU marks a mutual commitment to important practical initiatives in the spirit of cooperation and friendship in the time ahead.

On behalf of the University of Liège, Prof. Pierre Duysinx expressed his delight in collaborating with CTU – one of Vietnam’s key universities. He emphasized that CTU is an excellent partner for cooperation, aiming to develop and implement scientific projects with high practical impact. He also highlighted the importance of creating learning and research opportunities for students, doctoral candidates, and faculty members of both institutions, thereby contributing to sustainable development and strengthening the connection between the two educational systems.

According to the MoU, CTU and the University of Liège will promote cooperation and strengthen exchanges in education and research. Specifically, both parties will develop joint initiatives such as faculty and student exchanges; the organization of international conferences, seminars, and workshops; the implementation of scientific research activities; and the pursuit of scholarship opportunities to support learners. Notably, the two universities will enhance collaboration in key areas crucial to the sustainable development of both countries, including aquaculture, environment, and climate change.

Also as part of the program, Prof. Dr. Vu Ngoc Ut – Rector of the College of Aquaculture and Fisheries, CTU – expressed his gratitude for the contributions of Prof. Frédéric Farnir from the University of Liège since 2017. The Dean emphasized that the research projects involving by Prof. Frédéric Farnir have significantly contributed to the development and improvement of human resources and facilities at CTU. These contributions include participation in three research projects, the publication of five articles in international journals, and the supervision of research work for doctoral candidates.

The signing ceremony took place in a solemn atmosphere, reflecting the spirit of cooperation and long-term commitment between the two universities. This event not only served as an opportunity to reflect on the achievements made between CTU and the University of Liège but also marked the beginning of a new promising phase, paving the way for larger-scale collaborative programs in the future. With strong consensus and determination from the leadership of both universities, the partnership between CTU and the University of Liège is set to grow sustainably, bringing substantial value in education, research, and community service. It will contribute to the overall development of CTU, the University of Liège, and the higher education systems of both Vietnam and the Kingdom of Belgium.
