On July 15, 2025, the Prime Minister of Vietnam signed Decision No. 1531/QĐ-TTg on elevating Can Tho University to a higher-tier university model - as a regional university, entrusted with the mission of providing training, research, and technology transfer in service of socio-economic development in the Mekong Delta and the nation.This transformation goes beyond structural reform; it represents a historic turning point that affirms Can Tho University’s status as a flagship academic, research, and innovation institution within Vietnam’s higher education system.
With a vision to become a prestigious research university in the region and beyond, Can Tho University consistently pursues renewal and excellence. The University currently offers training in 19 out of 24 national academic fields, with 121 undergraduate programs, 59 master's programs, and 24 doctoral programs. Notably, 58.5% of faculty members hold a doctorate, including 24 professors and 182 associate professors. Can Tho University serves a large academic community with over 49,000 undergraduate, postgraduate learners, and doctoral candidates.
Can Tho University has trained more than 220,000 engineers and bachelor’s, over 10,000 master's graduates, and 200 PhDs - highly skilled professionals who continue to contribute to both local and national development. Furthermore, Can Tho University is among 13 key universities entrusted by the Ministry of Education and Training to establish centers of excellence and talent in high-tech fields.

With a strategic vision for sustainable development and a strong commitment to continuous improvement in training quality, Can Tho University places great emphasis on quality assurance and accreditation in accordance with both national and regional standards. In 2013, Can Tho University became one of the 30 Full Members of the ASEAN University Network (AUN). In 2017, the University achieved the Certificate of Institutional Accreditation, in the period 2018-2023. In 2023, Can Tho University achieved the second cycle Certificate of Institutional Accreditation, in the period 2023-2028.
Currently, Can Tho University comprises six specialized schools: the College of Engineering, the College of Information and Communication Technology, the School of Economics, the College of Agriculture, the School of Education, and the College of Aquaculture and Fisheries, along with 10 faculties, three research institutes, and one Elite High School. By 2027, Can Tho University plans to establish three more schools: the School of Social Sciences and Humanities, the College of Natural Sciences, and the School of Environment and Natural Resources. In addition to its achievements in training and research, Can Tho University actively fulfills its regional mission by spearheading programs in technology transfer, innovation, high-tech agriculture, circular and sustainable economies, and building a robust startup ecosystem for youth, students, and local enterprises.
Research Laboratory Complex (RLC) - Can Tho University
According to the QS World University Rankings 2026, released in June 2025, Can Tho University was ranked within the 1,201–1,400 group globally, specifically at 1,218th worldwide, and 6th among Vietnamese higher education institutions. Additionally, in the 2025–2026 Best Global Universities Rankings by U.S. News & World Report, Can Tho University was ranked 2,087th globally, 904th in Asia, and 8th among Vietnamese universities. Notably, the University also ranked 2nd in Vietnam for high-impact scientific publications, patents, utility solutions, and registered plant varieties in 2024.
With a strategic orientation to become the cultural and intellectual center of the Mekong Delta, as well as a regional hub of research and innovation, Can Tho University is determined to leverage internal strengths, expand international cooperation, invest in modern infrastructure, enhance faculty quality, and advance its governance model.
