Workshop on Snakehead Culture Development Sustainability based on Audiences Analysis

On May 18^th, 2017, Can Tho University (CTU) organized a workshop to collect stakeholders’ opinions for sustainable development of snakehead culture. The workshop was attended by representatives of CTU, Inland Fisheries Research and Development Institute, Cambodia; scientists, managers; seafeed processing companies; and farmers in the Mekong Delta.

The workshop took place at the hall of College of Aquaculture and Fisheries, CTU

Funded by USAID through Aquafish Innovation Lab, University of Connecticut collaborated with University of Rhode Island, USA to implement a project "Improving food security, household nutrition and trade through sustainable aquaculture in Cambodia and Vietnam".

The Cambodian Institute of Inland Fisheries Research and Development was selected as the site of the project in Cambodia. In Vietnam, the project was implemented at CTU with the objective of developing snakehead pelleted feed serving livelihoods, production and trade.

After 10 years of implementation since 2007, the project has achieved the results of research and successful conversion of feeding snakehead by pelleted feed contributing to the increase of freshwater aquaculture production, especially in the floodplain areas of the Mekong Delta; training and promotion of women’s participation in snakehead production; varied models and scales relevant to local conditions; and reducing the impact on the environment and aquatic resources; etc.

At the workshop, the participants were introduced the project as well as the research results on snakehead culture development and the cost and profit of snake culture models in the Mekong Delta. Then, the stakeholders’ opinions and discussion were recorded to contribute to the sustainable development of the snakehead industry and the snakehead culture model of the region.
