Handover Ceremony of Net House under Can Tho University Improvement Project

On October 30th, 2021, Can Tho University (CTU) held the Handover Ceremony of Net House under the CTU Improvement Project. Attending the ceremony were Prof. Tsunoda Manabu, Chief Advisor of the JICA CTU Project; Mr. Kunimoto Kazuhiko, the Project Coordinator; Mr. Hirano Koji, Project Management Specialist; Mr. Luong Thanh Hai, Deputy Director of Urban Infrastructure Development Investment Corporation (UDIC). At CTU's side, there were Prof. Dr. Ha Thanh Toan, Rector; Vice Rectors, leaders of College of Agriculture, and CTU's units.

The CTU Improvement Project using ODA loans from the Japanese Government through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has been implemented for seven years (from 2015 to 2022) with a total budget of 105.9 million USD (equivalent to 2,250 billion VND). The overall objective of the Project is "Upgrading Can Tho University into an excellent university that meets international standards in terms of training, scientific research, technology transfer and university administration" focusing on three fields of Agriculture, Aquaculture/Fisheries, and Environment, contributing to socio-economic development, adapting to climate change, protecting the environment, adding value for agriculture and fisheries in the Mekong Delta region. This Project has five main components including Human Resource Development, Facility Construction, Research Equipment Procurement, Research Program Implementation and Consulting Services.

In the Facility Construction component, the University invested in building four construction works including: (1) High-tech laboratory (7 floors) with a total floor area of 16,654 m2; (2) Research laboratory complex (5 floors) with a total floor area of 25,713 m2; (3) Net House with an area of 4,200 m2, and (4) Hatcheries with an area of 2,800 m2.

The construction was started on November 20th, 2019. In March 2021, the University handed over the Aquaculture Hatcheries with a total investment of 33.6 billion VND to College of Aquaculture and Fisheries.

The Net House is under the CTU Improvement Project, designed in December 2016 by the joint venture of Nihon Sekkei - JICED - EARL and NAGECCO Company, and constructed by UDIC contractor. The Net House has a total new construction area of 4,047 m2 with a total budget of 10.3 billion VND. The project includes one warehouse and six net houses.

Prof. Dr. Tran Trung Tinh, Vice Rector, Director of the Project Management Unit, represented the PMU, and Mr. Luong Thanh Hai, Deputy Director of UDIC, represented the contractor to present flowers to Prof. Dr. Tsunoda Manabu, sponsor representative, and Prof. Dr. Ha Thanh Toan, representative of the Project owner


The Net House was put into use to meet the demands for scientific research activities on crop production, thereby strengthening CTU's capacity to create high-quality research in the field of agriculture towards the goal of the CTU Improvement Project.


At the Ceremony, the Net House was officially handed over to College of Agriculture. Speaking at the Ceremony, Prof. Dr. Ha Thanh Toan, Rector of CTU, hoped that College of Agriculture and related units will exploit and use the Net House to serve teaching, practice, internship, and scientific research effectively in the near future. In addition, when being put into operation, the Net House will create a driving force to promote scientific research in the field of Agriculture of CTU as well as of the region, contributing to socio-economic development, climate change adaptation, environment protection, increase in agricultural values in the Mekong Delta.
