Celebration of the first anniversary of American Hangout

On June 19th, 2019, Can Tho University (CTU) was honored to welcome Ms. Mary Tarnowka, US Consul General in Ho Chi Minh City and the delegation to pay a visit to CTU. Representatives of the Rectorate Board and leaders of CTU's units had a meeting with the delegation of the US Consulate General.

In the intimate atmosphere, Prof. Dr. Ha Thanh Toan, CTU's Rector, sent a warm welcome to the delegation of the US Consulate General, at the same time, shared outstanding activities of the University in the recent years, especially the support of the US Embassy in Vietnam and the  the US Consulate General in Ho Chi Minh City, and cooperative programs between CTU and US partners.

The most recent cooperative activity is the establishment of Maker Innovation Space, resulting from the cooperation between CTU and Arizona State University under USAID funding through Built-IT project. Maker Innovation Space is equipped with modern equipment, aiming to actualize new ideas and innovation of students and faculties.

After the meeting, the delegation of the US Consulate General attended the celebration of the first year anniversary of American Hangout, located at CTU's Learning Resource Center. This is the first American Hangout in the Mekong Delta, established through the support of the US Consulate General and opened on June 5, 2018. American Hangout is displayed with collections of reference books about the United States, English teaching materials, magazines, CDs, DVDs, information about studying in the US, etc. It is home to online and in-person programs that can promote American cultures, interests, and priorities in Vietnam. The American Hangout serves as a reference point for faculty, students, interested community groups in Can Tho and the Mekong Delta to freely exchange ideas and knowledge, improve English, and learn about the US.

Speaking at the anniversary program, Ms. Mary Tarnowka expressed her joy at the establishment of the American Hangout at CTU. Mentioning the important role of the American Hangout, she affirmed that this is a necessary space for teachers, students and communities in Can Tho and the Mekong Delta region to meet and exchange English knowledge and cultures. Ms. Mary Tarnowka pledged that the American Hangout continues to be provided with more updated materials from the US; online and offline programs are strengthened. On this occasion, Ms. Mary Tarnowka sent thanks to CTU for the support, and committed to collaborate closely with the University to improve the learning outcomes of students in the Mekong Delta.
