The 15th Anniversary Celebration of the Research Institute for Climate Change

On November 10th, 2023, the Research Institute for Climate Change (DRAGON-Mekong Institute) at Can Tho University (CTU) celebrated its 15th Anniversary (2008-2023). This momentous occasion symbolized a pivotal milestone, recognizing the substantial development of the Institute over the past 15 years.

The event was graced by representatives of CTU’s leaders, leader representatives of CTU-affiliated units, former leaders of DRAGON-Mekong Institute, and all the staff members of the DRAGON-Mekong Institute.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Van Pham Dang Tri, Director of the DRAGON-Mekong Institute delivered the opening remarks

In the opening address, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Van Pham Dang Tri reflected on the Institute's formation and development stages. His speech underscored the Institute's crucial role in tackling climate change issues in the Mekong Delta and outlined future directions for its activities.

The Delta Research and Global Observation Network (DRAGON) is implemented in accordance with the joint statement released by the Governments of Vietnam and the United States of America on June 25, 2008. This statement outlined the establishment of the DRAGON-Mekong Institute at CTU, tasked with overseeing Mekong-related research. Officially inaugurated on November 12th, 2008, the DRAGON-Mekong Institute emerged through a collaborative partnership between CTU and the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).

Throughout its 15 years of establishment and growth, the DRAGON-Mekong has consistently prioritized robust collaboration with communities, local authorities, and enterprises. The Institute proactively broadens its network through strategic partnerships, fostering relationships at both domestic and international levels.

The Vice-Chairman of CTU Board of Trustees, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Chi Ngon, conveyed his impression and confidence in the DRAGON-Mekong Institute. Recognizing its young, creative, and talented workforce, he acknowledged the Institute's continuous efforts. He expressed the expectation that DRAGON-Mekong would evolve into a think-tank addressing climate-related issues, delivering professional, high-quality outputs to society.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Hieu Trung, Vice Rector of CTU and former Director of the DRAGON-Mekong Institute shared the maturity of the staff working at the Institute

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Hieu Trung emphasized that with the support of CTU’s staff members, who possess professional competence and rich experience, the Institute has gradually affirmed its position in climate change research and made significant contributions to relevant policies in the Mekong Delta region. The research results conducted by the Institute in collaboration with partner organizations, not only provide important information about the current climate status in the region but also predict and assess potential impacts in the future.

Prof. Dr. Ha Thanh Toan, Former Rector of CTU, thanked the units that have accompanied the DRAGON-Mekong Institute for the past 15 years

Mr. Matthew Andersen from the U.S. Department of the Interior and the USGS expressed his commitment to accompany the DRAGON-Mekong Institute in the coming time

Mr. Willem Timmerman, the First Secretary of the Water and Energy Department at the Embassy of the Netherlands in Hanoi, shared his commitment to continue supporting the DRAGON-Mekong Institute in the future

Moving forward, guided by a well-defined development strategy, the DRAGON-Mekong Institute will persist in its efforts to evolve into a foremost research center in the realm of climate change. The Institute aims to make positive contributions to the sustainable development of the Mekong Delta region while sharing valuable experiences with other deltas globally.
