On June 18th, 2023, in the framework of Vietnam - Japan Trade and Cultural Exchange Program, a dialogue on “Strengthening friendship and cooperation with Japanese partners” was taken place at the Learning Resource Center, Can Tho University (CTU). This event was to review the results of cooperation between the two countries, including outstanding achievements between Can Tho city, Can Tho University and Japanese partners.
Attending the dialogue, on the Japanese side, there were Mr. Shiraishi Hideyuki, the Consulate General of Japan in Vietnam; Mr. Watanabe Michitaro, Mayor of Nasushiobara City, Japan, and delegates from the Consulate General, Nasushiobara city, and Japanese businesses. On the Vietnamese side, there were Mr. Nguyen Thuc Hien, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Can Tho city; Prof. Dr. Ha Thanh Toan, Rector of CTU; representatives of departments, agencies of Can Tho city, CTU’s units, and students.

Representative of the Consulate General, Mr. Shiraishi Hideyuki said that the Japanese government has recognized the development potential of Can Tho City and wished to promote cooperation. It is proved by the support of Japanese cooperation organizations, and especially the establishment of JICA (Japan International Cooperation Agency) office in Vietnam. He hoped that transport works and crucial projects supported by ODA loans from the Japanese government would not only contribute to improving the lives of Can Tho people but also help the city achieve its development goals of sustainable economy.

In the dialogue, the participants shared information about important milestones in the process of establishing the Vietnam - Japan relationship. Accordingly, the efforts of Can Tho city were mentioned in improving the quality of the investment environment; supporting Japanese businesses to result in improving the quality of training, research and technology transfer of CTU.
The Japanese side proposed to increase the competitive advantage of human resources; build industrial style; expand employment opportunities for Vietnamese human resources; support training for students of CTU. In addition, Japanese businesses hoped that the city would soon expand opportunities for cooperation and development in Can Tho’s strong areas such as services, agriculture, health care, tourism and education.
